Stained Threads Reclaimed - Our Process

At suSTAINED, every piece begins as a story—a material once deemed unusable, discovered at a thrift store and given a second chance. We dedicate time and attention to detail, carefully determining the best way to reclaim each material, whether through knitting or weaving.

Process - Weaving

Our woven pieces start by transforming discarded material into long strips of fabric. From there, we design pattern pieces that minimize curves, reducing waste and creating a stronger structure. These patterns are used to create a fully fashioned loom. By screwing nails into scrap wood following the pattern, we create a custom loom, weaving the fabric strips through yarn to form our own material. This process emphasizes zero-waste fashion and the art of fully fashioned pattern-making.

Process - Knitting

For our knit pieces, we study each garment to determine the best way to reclaim its potential, focusing on circularity and the ability to reuse the yarn. By avoiding unnecessary cutting, we ensure minimal waste. Patterns are designed with precision to be fully fashioned, using a Brother Chunky Knitting Machine from 1980 to craft timeless and sustainable knit designs.

Our process is a celebration of thoughtful design, reclaiming materials, and honoring the beauty of zero-waste, sustainable fashion.
